Elon Musk has publicly criticised filmmaker Christopher Nolan, accusing the Oscar-winning director of sacrificing artistic integrity amid online backlash over casting rumours surrounding Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey.
The tech billionaire posted his comments on X over the weekend as speculation intensified that actress Lupita Nyong’o may play Helen of Troy in Nolan’s direct adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem.
“Chris Nolan has lost his integrity,” Mr Musk wrote on Saturday, entering a growing debate over whether the reported casting would stay faithful to the original source material.
Ms Nyong’o’s role has not been officially confirmed, although her involvement with the project was first reported in late 2024. The controversy began when an X user claimed she would portray Helen, sharing an image with the caption: “Already ruined the film for me. People are tired of woke casting.”
Critics pointed out that Homer described Helen as fair-skinned and fair-haired, famously known as “the face that launched a thousand ships,” and argued that the rumoured choice conflicted with the poet’s depiction. The post sparked thousands of responses, with users clashing over representation, historical accuracy and modern casting practices.
“It makes you think of casting and woke stuff instead of just enjoying the movie,” one commenter wrote, while another said: “I’m not watching this.” Others were more hostile, with one claiming the decision was “absolutely disgusting” and ignored what was written “thousands of years ago”.
Some replies to Mr Musk alleged studios were pressured by diversity rules, with one writing: “To get tax credits, they have DEI requirements on every movie,” while another claimed Oscar eligibility demanded “woke” casting.
Memes mocking the rumoured role circulated, often contrasting Ms Nyong’o with ancient descriptions of Helen as “white-armed” and “golden-haired”. However, not everyone objected. One user argued that the debate was overblown, while another compared it to historical portrayals of biblical figures played by actors of different backgrounds. Others defended Ms Nyong’o’s talent, citing her Oscar-winning performance in 12 Years a Slave.
Variety first linked the actress to Nolan’s project in November 2024, with the title confirmed the following month. Universal Pictures has not yet confirmed which character, if any, she will play.
The ensemble cast already includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Elliot Page. The film is also notable for being the first narrative feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras, aided by new sound-dampening technology that allows intimate dialogue recording.
Rapper Travis Scott’s involvement was revealed during coverage of the NFL AFC Championship game.
Mr Musk has previously criticised Hollywood casting, including attacking Netflix’s Adolescence earlier this year for what he described as politically motivated “race-swapping”, claims the show’s creator rejected as false.
