Owners of nearly 60 car models from around two dozen manufacturers could face road tax bills of £5,690 from April, as Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rises for the 2026 financial year. First-year VED for the highest-emitting petrol and diesel cars has increased by £200, up from £5,490, affecting 59 models from brands including Audi, Ford and BMW.
The steep rise follows a major government hike introduced in April 2025, when first-year VED charges for new petrol and diesel cars doubled from £2,745 to £5,490. The highest rate applies only to vehicles emitting more than 255g/km of CO₂.
First-year VED now ranges from £10 for zero-emission cars to £5,690. For average petrol and diesel models, the charge is £560 and £1,360 respectively. Standard annual VED for existing cars will also rise slightly, from £195 to £200.
