A popular takeaway in Basildon has applied to extend its opening hours, stating the move is necessary to remain financially viable.

Wingo, located in Pitsea Town Centre, has submitted an application to Basildon Council seeking permission to operate between 11pm and 5am to provide late-night refreshments. If approved, the business would switch to delivery-only service after 11pm.

Currently, the takeaway trades daily from 6am until 11pm. Owner Ehsan Jahromi said declining revenue has placed significant pressure on the business. “Our sales have dropped, and we need to survive and meet our financial obligations. Paying the rent has become increasingly difficult. Extending our hours would help us stay afloat,” he explained.

Jahromi added that the downturn is not isolated. “It’s a nationwide issue. Sales have been falling across the country for around two years now—that’s when we first noticed the decline,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Wingo maintains strong customer feedback. The takeaway holds a 4.4-star rating on Uber Eats based on more than 190 reviews. It also received a five-star food hygiene rating following its most recent inspection on May 9, 2024. Inspectors rated the business as “good” in food handling standards, cleanliness and condition of the premises, and overall food safety management.
